Cord Blood Study

Just found info about a new procedure where cord blood (from umbilical cords) is used to treat brain injuries like Selah's. I hunted down a couple of studies, she wouldn't qualify for either. One is for people over 18 yrs old, the other is for children who have banked their cord blood. PLEASE pray that we or the doctors here will find a study that will accept her!!!!! If you have ANY info on this please contact me!!!!!!

I read a medially documented case where a child was without a heart beat for 45 minutes and is now back to normal thanks to this! It was by using her own banked cord blood but why not use a donor's?

Please pray that we can find a study!!! One of the doctors here was hesitant but we learned a LONG time ago to be aggressive and not to sit back and wait on anyone to find us help. I reminded him that we would have a son who had no sight if we hadn't pushed and looked for something "experimental" Nothing ventured, nothing gained is an old but good saying!

So if you know of anything like this, please let me know. Thanks!

  2. I have a friend who did something like this for her little girl with Cerebral palsy. They went to China for the therapy. The hospital used stem cells from cord blood. I'm asking her for more information.

  3. I don't know why I never thought of this before! I get a homeschooling e-newsletter from a mother, Diane, whose 20 (something?) yo son suffered from cardiac arrest right before Christmas.

He received stem cell therapy in Mexico in June.

Also, I thought you appreciate this post about a dream she had about him a few months before. :-)

The only email address I can find for her is Heart-to-Heart@LoveToLearn.net . Hope that helps! I'm sure she would be a great resource.

We were gone over the weekend and am just getting caught up. Selah was never far from our thoughts and prayers.

  4. I don't know you personally, actually a friend posted your original blog asking for prayers for selah and we as a family have been praying ever since. We live in tn. You may try calling Vanderbilt children's hospital which is huge on experimental procedures and care for children and even possibly st Jude. I know st Jude primarily is cancer related but they may be able to help lead you into a good direction......

  7. I do not mean to discourage but I think it will be near impossible in the USA. I think US doctors are only experimenting with individuals with their own cord blood.
I looked into cordblood studies for my son with DS b/c we banked his brothers blood and contacted a study at duke this what they told me..
We cannot use a sibling cord blood for any of these studies as first, we need to find out if the stem cell will actually help the patient's with their symptoms. Secondly, in order to give a sibling cord blood, we would have to give high doses of chemotherapy to your child with Down's in order for the sibling cells to engraft or take. There is only a 25 % chance that the sibling would HLA match.
BUT in mexico they will do it, here is part of the email they sent me three years ago, I hope it helps.

Dr. Ramirez in Tijuana, Mexico has been using well tested, human umbilical cord stem cells for the past 7 years with good results in children with cognitive disorders and genetic disorders. His website is http://www.ramirezdelrio.com There is a handbook that provides information on the treatments, cells, costs, etc. There is also a DVD under Cerebral Palsy Testimonials that provides a nice overview of the trip to Mexico and meeting Dr. Ramirez.

If this treatment is of interest and you would like to talk with Dr. Charles Lacroix about the procedure, our toll free number is 800-288-7016. He will ask for medical records for a better idea of what treatments would be helpful. So we are also enclosing a patient enrollment form (no obligation - just gives us more information) and a clinical records consent form.

If you would like to fax us any records, our fax number is 949-388-3441.

For CD copies of MRI scans (they would like to see the report as well as the actual scans) our address is:

    Dr. Charles Lacroix
    Steenblock Research Institute
    1064 Calle Negocio #B
    San Clemente, CA 92673

If you would like to contact Dr. Ramirez about using your other child's cord blood, he would probably want to expand just the stem cells from the blood to avoid any graft versus host reactions. His email address is framirezdelrio@gmail.com The expansion is probably more than the regular cost. If so, you could consider saving the cord blood for a few more years (if that is do-able) as a safety net for your other child.

In the meantime, our best wishes to your child for this year bringing greater health and vitality!

    Sincerely,

    The SRI Research Group

    1. The more I read about cord blood, I wasn't sure about it either not that I was going to try. There is an adult study going on with donated cord blood but a friend sent me an aritcle tied with all this and they are using wisdom teeth to grow stem cells! The age they like to harvest them is 8-10 yrs and they are seeming even stronger to help in this kind of injury. I have a email into the doctor!!!!! so excited. I think something will come of this.
