Beautiful Day in Florida

Beautiful day in Florida....started out by taking Steve to get his braces adjusted.  Across the street from the dentist is a health food store, a real food store like Whole Foods just smaller.  I did some shopping and really enjoyed looking around.  We are trying our best to eat healthy, not just low fat but more organic, no preservative type things.  I do my best to but things that I can read the ingredients of the foods we eat.  It's harder because I have to cook more but it is worth it.  I was really happy they had chips with only olive oil and rosemary, dear Lord they were SO good!  I read a book that talked about how vegetable oils like canola, soybean etc are bad for your body.  They are made in high heat that activates something bad....LOL  I really paid attention, I just can't remember all the details now.  But I had heard all that before so I cleaned out our kitchen.  The only time it is healthy to eat things with that is when it is Ex   oil.  You can buy vegetable oil like that in health food stores.  I use alot of olive oil which is very good for you but even then you should get Extra Virgin Olive Oil, according to the book.  Anyhow we are trying to be as healthy as possible and as natural as possible!

Selah is doing great, her nurse has had her up and outside alot today.  She is very content and calm.  It's so wonderful to see her feeling good.

Today has been a bit of a free day for my kids.  No therapy for the little ones and I let the boys take off from homeschooling.  I've been really strict about their schoolwork as they were behind with us being gone, so they've even done schoolwork on Saturdays poor boys!  The boys did mow the yards and do some weeding but that didn't take too long.  Shad is almost done with 3rd grade work and I may have to order some 4th grade work for him.  It's better he stay ahead.  Steve is doing ok but he is in 11th so the work is a bit harder!  They use the same curriculum their school uses that allows them to work at their own pace.  It's somewhat a self taught curriculum.  When we moved here 7 years ago and Steve changed schools and curriculum I wasn't too thrilled with it.  But I have seen that he has amazing reading comprehension and I think that comes from doing so much reading.  Every curriculum has it's pro's and con's.

Sarah got to play in her new pool today.  At first she seemed shocked but then she remembered it from last year and was busy splashing.  April in Florida is GREAT!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I promised alot of great pictures today!  The first picture is from the bowling alley across the street.  Please look at what is outlawed in there.....the last one cracked me up....NO ONE spoke English around there...doubt they read it either hahahaha!

a typical Ukraine house in the area

Ok you can't really tell but looking back and down (where you can't see) is the steepest hill I have ever climbed.  I was pretty sure I was going to die coming up it, trying to push Sam in his wheelchair.  Jon and I both turned that over to Steve LOL!

I love the comments I get about my pictures and time in Ukraine.  I truly love that country, especially the area we were in.  I've never had any place grab my heart like it did.

So we have $400 raised for our orphan/adoption ministry!  You can give to the girls from now till the end of May!  My goal is to give them $1000!

My goal is to raise $1000 for this family by the end of May! You can give in two ways. First you can send a check to Grace Church 7060 Berry Road, Zephyrhills Fl 33540 attn: Orphan fund and I will send one check to Grace Haven Ministries or you can click here,
and give on Grace Haven's GIVE page. Just please write it is for Patricia and the family will be able to use it for both girls.
Also please write in there that you are my friend and giving in honor of Selah & Sarah! I just want to know if we meet our goal of $1000 for these girls!

Our first project!

Very excited to be sharing with you the first two orphans I've chosen to receive our help!  The first two pictures are of the little girl we loved so much and had looked into adopting her also.  We are so thankful she has a family coming for her....soon!  This little girl will soon know the love of a family!

And I am so happy to announce the same family will be adopting another little girl that we met and enjoyed loving on her!  L will be coming home soon too!!!!
Here I am holding Sarah with L sitting next to me.

here is L on the swing set.  Jon is pushing her.  The girl across from her V, just arrived home with her family THIS week, the little tiny girl in the swing right beside her N, came home this past fall.  And Selah is in the red swing  L seems to only have a physical problem with her legs, she is a dear and really wants a family.  I'm thrilled that the girls will be sisters1

Thank you for your giving...you are making a REAL difference in the lives of children, I can promise you with everything that is in me, these girls want families...they want to leave the orphanage for good.  I thank God a family has come for them.  Please understand, I held these girls, I looked in their faces, I saw the longing for love....Thank you for your gifts.  Please do not think any gift is too small, it could be the last little bit that is needed for their adoption.

Selah had a GI appointment this morning, all is well and the process to change her from Pedisure to a veggie based formula has started.  hopefully our insurances will agree that she would do better on it.  She has gained so much weight since the accident, it's not healthy for her to continue gaining at this pace.  Evidently this is not a common problem with kids with brain injuries so I'm thankful we have this "problem"  I like the new formula, it's ingredients are actually VEGETABLES!

Again today as we had to put Selah in and take her out of the car seat in the van, her nurse and I dreamed about having a wheelchair accessible van!  I did some looking around today and making some calls and emails.  I now have an idea of what we would need and how much it is...it's expensive, but I know something will work out for her.  Lord knows I don't want ot have to drive a huge van, I thought a mini van was huge the first time I drove it!  I can't imagine driving anything bigger but Selah needs that so I will do it.  I may have to park a half mile from entrances but hey we will just get our exercise!  Please continue to pray that God will make a way for us.

My brother in law Jim is here with us tonight.  He just passed the  3.5 month course to become an adult felony probation officer, including being Pepper Sprayed!  We are so proud of him and excited about this new journey of his.  He is my husband's BFF as well as brother and that is special.  He is the little brother I never had....LOL  we pick on each other alot!  In Love:)   The kids have loved hearing his stories and laughing with him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked back on my pictures...and I don't have any for today!  What was I thinking to  NOT take pictures daily?  We must have just been concentrating on the girls and everyday felt like "Ground Hog Day" so that might have been a part of why we didn't take pictures daily but tomorrow I have some wonderful pictures to share of the girls and of the town.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With all the craziness in the news lately, one story got over looked.  There was a large earthquake in China, near where Shad was from.  You may remember this area was hit really hard some years ago.  this time was not as bad, but I pray for the people affected by this disaster.  Below is a picture of Shad's orphanage, don't be fooled because it is new...it was very cold, he was starving and it was rough...

Shad got picked to "deliver the ball" for the Storm vs New Orleans game next week!  he is pumped.  Steve entered him into the drawing and I got a call today.  We will get more info in the next few days but he is one excited boy!  I'm so happy for him!

---------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE

Cephas (Maxim) and Lucia (Julia) will be leaving the orphanage tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Pray as they travel home soon.  There will be a few days of American paperwork for visas etc...then they will start home.  It will not be an easy time physically for either of them...but they will be going home...Thank You Lord!

Adoption is a wonderful thing, I don't even have the words to express it BUT to know the children, to have seen them in their situations and NOW to know they have loving families and a home...you just do not know what that does to my heart!  It is a true picture of redemption...there are no other words for it.

The institution was started in 1966.  In all those years. there were only 4 children adopted before my girls were...in 45 years...there were only 4 other children adopted before Sarah and Selah! Since the girls' adoption, there has been 4 more....in just one year and soon there will be more!

Last December all the children were moved out of the institution and put into orphanages, the girls went to one and the boys to another.  So now the children are being adopted from other places but it is the same children we met and loved.  Children that had NO hope BUT God....and God touched hearts that said YES...we will go and bring them home!  Thank you Lord for placing the lonely in families!  Thank you that I've been privileged to be a part of it and to see it all unfold....It is a balm to my heart.....

Good night and God bless you all....please pray for Selah!

Speech Evaluation, Friendships and Fund

I just want to thank you all for the kind comments I got on my blog and by email.  Sharing about the panic attacks, makes me very vulnerable to criticism and I so appreciate the positive uplifting comments I have received.  Thank you for your openness also!

This morning Selah had her Speech Evaluation.  For some reason, I started crying when we went into it.  That came out of no where also.  Sometimes I cry when we go somewhere that I haven't been to since the accident, but we had no association with this therapy place at all.  We got through all the questions about what she could do before the accident and it just broke my heart.  The therapist was great, (although I can't help but wonder what she thinks about this crazy Mama!)  We had a good talk and she pointed out to me how very delayed Selah was before the accident.  And also how alone in the world she was before we adopted her and how she is loved and cared for by us and by all of the nurses, therapists and helpers that work with her now.  She really encouraged my heart.

She also seemed quite sure that Selah is not far from coming off the trach!  We haven't heard such good news since we were in NY!  She pointed out how well Selah handles her secretions (she doesn't drool) and all the things she can do.  She tried her on a "passy muir valve"  Currently Selah is on a "nose" over the trach that allows her to breath in and out the trach.  The "nose" humidifies the air and cleans it somewhat like our own noses do.  The passy muir valve, allows her to breath IN but she has to breath out her mouth.  It's also called  "talking valve"  She could actually make noise while wearing it.  She had been started on in NY but the "rehab" didn't want her using it and since we've been home, we couldn't use it without a doctor's order for our nurse's sakes.  So now once we get the order tomorrow, Selah will wear it all day long.  She can't sleep in it but she will wear it all the time.  Hopefully we will again start hearing her make noises like she was starting to make in NY.

Going to that valve, is the start of working her off the trach altogether!

Last night her heart rate went up some and she was making a bit of a gurgly noise.  Jon suctioned her but nothing came up.  Her oxygen level was at 100%...this morning our nurse noticed her trach was clogged.  Just like noses, it can get boggers LOL.  Well it was completely clogged all the way down, so she breathed around it last night and kept her oxygen level up at 100%!  So we were proud of her, but we think it scared her a bit as her heart rate was in the 100-110 range which is becoming a high range for her.

Her heart rate is averaging in the 60's at night now!  Isn't that great!!!!

So we had a great speech evaluation and are looking forward to working with the therapist:)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please pray that God will provide for her a handicapped van.  It is very hard to transport her now.  We have to carry her out to the van, and then one of us gets into the van and is handed Selah, who we have to put in to her car seat in the back row.  We have to put her onto the back row with the middle seat taken out because sometimes she stiffens up and we don't want to worry about her getting her leg caught or hurt by being too close to a seat.  She can't help at all and can't hold her head up, so it is a huge job to get her in and out.  We are afraid she will be hurt accidentally or one of us will hurt our backs in doing this.

We need to be able to place her in her wheelchair and wheel her into the van and lock it in place. And it needs to be able to seat all of us and a nurse and be in great condition as I do not want to be stuck on the side of the road with Selah!

When I ever post any need we have, I tend to get a few nasty emails or comments but this is the biggest physical/material need I've ever had before in my life.  I'm not even asking anyone to donate at this time, I'm just asking you to pray that God will make a way.  We can not take on a monthly car payment and everything I've checked into is very expensive.  When we adopted the girls, we had everything we needed, no one really plans for this type of situation nor do they imagine needing something like this.  We usually save up for the things we need or make do.  Selah can't make do much longer.  She barely fits in to the car seat but she has to have support for her neck/head.  If she is in a wheelchair she will have it.

God has always provided what we have needed, we are not people who tend to be extravagant at all LOL  so I know God will provide somehow for this too, please pray that it happens quickly though!  Today I was putting her in, and I just prayed that God would help us with this huge need.  And yes I believe everything I have comes from the hand of God, whether we save for it or whether we get a good deal or if someone gives us something....  So I know God will provide this in some way.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tonight I had a call from one of my BFFs Jackie!  Her husband's car had broke down on the interstate and she wanted me to ride up with her to get him.  Thankfully Jon was home early and we have our night nurse so I got to ride with her.  For two ladies on a mission, we had a blast.  We laughed all the way up and back about everything we could think and talk about.  She has a similar humor, realizing sometimes it is better to laugh about something than to cry:)  So I cried this morning and laughed tonight:)   Believe me I have learned that FRIENDSHIP is very important.  I've learned the value of a true friendship and not to take the time together for granted.  In this day and time, it's hard to find the time to connect with our friends, it was great to connect with her tonight:)  Jackie and I have been friends since college ( over 27 years) before we were married, before kids...there is nothing like a long term friendship.  I say I have BFFs and I am so blessed to have several, one I grew up with, several from college and one from the last few years.  Angela, Jackie, Charlene, Meichelle, Jan, Kandi,  they are all from different times in my life, only two of them are close to each other, but they are all precious to me and I am blest to have them in my life!

My husband kidded me I can't be friends with someone if I haven't known them for 20+ years but that is not true.  When we moved here 7 years ago, I felt really alone and I prayed that God would send me a close friend,  All my BFFs except Jackie lived out of state and now I lived in a different town than she did!  It was hard enough to get time together.  This is hard to explain, but my close friends all are alike in some ways and that is they aren't all "girly girly" and we don't do drama...(not too much at least)  And quite honestly I can't handle someone who is too "spiritual"  I need  down to earth friends!!!!   So I really had no hope that I'd find a friend that I could connect with...but through a "series of fortunate circumstances" I met my friend Kandi....As our friendship grew, we both shared how we'd prayed for a certain type of friend.  And God answered in a completely hilarious way....it's a long story and I'm not sure how to share it but God brought us together:)  I'm thankful that God hears our prayers about all kinds of things.

A year ago today.................................

V (who is now home in America as of yesterday!!!!!!!!!)  Sarah Jon and Selah

This is me holding Angela the girl we sponser...she is 12 years old.

I was honored to hold her and swing her.  Please pray that God will send a family for her.  She has the sweetest spirit, so like our Sarah.  She smiled all the time, I couldn't help but cry as I sat there with her.  I prayed that God would send a family for her....I still pray that for her.

So a year ago today, we were back outside and now they were bringing more of the kids out with us.  This was something I dreaded but loved.  I dreaded it because many of the children will never find families....it hurt my heart.  I loved it because it gave us a chance to love on them, even if it was for but a little while.  It was a very bittersweet experience.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Well I got the first check for the Orphan/Adoption Fund today from he original donor.....AND a friend out in Oklahoma, sent a check in also....all togeher we have $300 for the first child(ren) and we haven't even really kicked it off yet!  I'm so excited.  Tonight it is late but I wanted to share about Selah's day but tomorrow, I will introduce the first two that will be helped through this fund....They are both near and dear to my heart, girls I met and played with in Torez and they have a family coming for them!!!!  I asked for permission to share their story and pictures.  So I hope between now and the end of May we can raise $1000 for them!  We have $300 and I commit to giving  $100 so now we have $400....only $600 to go:)  I'll give details on how you can give both through our church or another ministry tomorrow!  I'm looking forward to being a part of their redemption story!  There is nothing like meeting a child in an orphanage and then seeing them united with a family....NOTHING is more beautiful than that!

God bless you all, thank  you again for your prayers and kind words!  Please continue to pray for Selah!

Church time... Dealing with Panic attacks

Selah had a good night and didn't wake up till 5:30 am!  She is spoiling us!  Her nurse and I took her to the orthopedic doctor today, he is pleased with her legs/ankles and feet!  We don't go back for 6 months.  He has ordered splints for her hands/arms.  Last night I noticed one arm doing something odd.  Kinda pulled back and twisted,  it worried me so much I had to take a "happy pill"!  No lie between the whole trip with Sam to NY and then her arm looking so odd....the pills came out!  I'm not ashamed to admit it.  I went to bed, not sure what was going on with me but you can believe I repented  (hoping it was just a panic attack and not a heart attack!)... obviously it was just a panic attack.  It totally sucks...I understand it comes from me but it is not from me if it makes sense.

I've spent my life dealing with various disasters..I really think of myself as an extremely strong person.  Someone told me in my comments to "put on my big girl panties"  (I'm sure tongue in cheek)  Well they have been on for many years.  But this new thing is crazy!

This is how it happens...I'm just doing my thing, with my mind blank and it hits like a hurricane.  If anyone else told me they were having panic attacks, I'd assume they were working themselves up into a lather...NOT SO!  That is what scares me the most of it.  It happens without warnimg and it it usually hits me when there is nothing going on. it hit me one night when I was reading a book!  Last night was different, I was already worried about the trip and then I see Selah's arm looking different.  I knew it was not a good sign, it shows there is still brain responds to the accident and the brain damage.  I was bending over her bed looking at her arm, she was sound asleep (heart rate in the LOW 60's) and WHAM! I almost passed out over her bed!  I sat myself down quickly.  Even tho I'm telling the whole world about it today, I don't like to tell my family when it happens.  I don't want to worry the kids or Jon.  It seems worse if anyone knows about it as it is happening!  It's crazy and I'm shocked personally that it is happening to me.  Looking at my situation objectively and professionally, I totally think it is a miracle that all I'm doing is having high heart rates!

Still haven't made a decision about the NY trip, how we are going to handle it.  I just got the sad news that Dr A's beloved wife passed away this past weekend.  God be with that dear dear man!  I knew she was in declining health....they were very very close.  Please say a prayer for his comfort!

On a very happy note, I just got the first check to go into Grace Church's orphan/adoption fund!  I already have a family who is adopting TWO girls that I know, in mind!  I will begin sharing all about it next week and you all will have a whole month to get involved!  I'm so excited!

================================

A year ago today we went started the day out at the institution.  We had a good visit with the girls, feeling closer to them daily as I can see the pictures and videos.  Then our driver took us back to the apartment and we got the boys and headed off for church:)

The Pentecostal church in Torez is good size, probably had 500 people in attendance.  One of the members Alexic helped us and translated.  It turned out he lived near us and worked in the hotel near our apartment.  Everyone was amazing!  We felt so much love from the pastor, his wife and their staff.  After church they invited us to share a meal with them.  We all sat around talking as much as we could.  Alexic could translate some but the conversations were going fast.  We LOVED all of them so much!  Sometimes when we couldnt' really get a point or a word across we'd just say "Hallelujah"  it was a special time!

They sang with great gusto, some of the music we recognized...such as the song, "Blessed be the His Name"  we sang in English as they sung in Russian...."He gives and takes away, He gives and takes away, YET my heart will CHOSE to say. Lord Blessed be your name"  How soon that song would come to mean so much more than just words to me!

I'm still choosing to say "Lord Blessed be your name"!!!!

I LOVE this picture  look at Sarah's arm, I felt like she was trusting me

Two pastors!

Their music minister, Alexic, me, Jon, the pastor and his wife

What a great day!  We felt their love, they cared for us, fed us, wouldn't let us walk back to the apartment.  They were just a blessing to us in many ways!

Isn't it amazing to meet folks, and feel such love for them?  And it is a blessing to know ONE day we will all be praising our Savior around the throne together!

By the way, we are NOT legalistic people BUT we do lead by example and we always show our children how important it is to be in church WHERE EVER we are in the world!  I had to laugh when we were in Ukraine, and it was not the easiest thing to make it to church, to think of some of the excuses I hear as a pastor's wife as to why some can't make it to church!  I don't mean that mean, but really where is our commitment level to God?  I'm not saying going to church will save anyone...BUT it is a good discipline and the bible commands us to "Not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, especially as we see THE day approaching"  So think about that when you want to lie in bed instead of getting up and going to church some Sunday!

------------------------

So please pray for Selah!!!

Selah's video and Sarah pulling up!

Both of these videos were taken a year ago yesterday, our first Sarurday at the instituion.  I'm thrilled they uploaded, it took awhile!

The top video is of Selah, she had been watching us tickle Sarah but didn't want us to touch her.  Then she laid on the floor like Sarah and rolled towards us and I could tell she wanted to be tickled too.  This video was taken about an hour after us being there, it took her that long.  But it is the sweetest video I think we have of her.  In it you can hear her funny little babbling noises....it takes my breath away to hear her do that again.

This video of Sarah blew the staff away.  When I told them on Monday she had pulled up ( I had to show them by gestures) they did not believe she could do it until I showed them the video.  Her worker was shocked that she could do it!  I am so glad we have that video.  I have to admit I was a bit smug when I showed it to them!!!
